Con-way Inc. Wins National Award for Workplace Wellness Program

Company Named "Silver" Winner of Health at Work Award Given by ComPsych Corp.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Oct. 02, 2007 -

Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW) announced today that it has been named a silver winner in the third annual Health at Work Award, sponsored by ComPsych® Corporation. Con-way received the award for its formalized company wellness initiative. The initiative promotes improved health and fitness for the trucking company’s employees through an integrated program of on-site counseling, health risk assessment and education, early injury intervention coaching and injury prevention training.

ComPsych Corporation is the world’s largest provider of employee assistance programs and is the worldwide leader in GuidanceResources® (EAPs, behavioral health, work-life, wellness and crisis intervention services). Con-way is a $4.7 billion freight transportation and logistics services company headquartered in San Mateo, Calif.

Winners were selected based on their wellness program’s comprehensiveness, delivery, promotion, participation rates and results achieved, according to Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, chairman and CEO, ComPsych.

“Employers continue to advance their wellness programs in the mission to control health costs. This year’s entries showed a great deal of ingenuity, with programs aimed at both getting employees involved and keeping them engaged,” said Dr. Chaifetz. “Con-way stood out because it brought together new specialized staff, outside vendors and internally created programs and integrated these components into a unique and effective initiative that has been embraced by employees and is reducing health care costs. We applaud Con-way for achieving meaningful advances in health and wellness in the workplace, and improving the lives of employees.”

“The business of moving freight is one that comes with everyday physical demands on our employees,” said Robert Petrancosta, vice president, safety and environmental compliance, Con-way Freight. “Helping our employees properly prepare for and manage the physical aspects of the job, while providing them with resources to improve their overall health, not only reduces health care costs and lost work days, but improves morale. We found that our employees truly do want to improve their health — inside and outside of the workplace. This program has given them the knowledge, motivation and incentive to do so.”

The company initiated the program within its largest operating unit, less-than-truckload freight carrier Con-way Freight, piloting it in Los Angeles, one of the company’s largest service centers. In the first year, the program produced an 80 percent decrease in worker’s compensation costs and a 75 percent decrease in lost work days. Based on the success of the pilot, the company decided to expand the program to include more than 20 of its freight service centers and major office locations in the United States.

Highlights of Con-way’s health and wellness promotion programs include:

  • Deployment of dedicated, highly qualified, full-time wellness coaches on site at company facilities
  • Over 95 percent of employees participated in initial voluntary health risk assessments with their coaches
  • More than 80 percent of employees met with wellness coaches at least six times during the year to evaluate progress
  • Wide adoption of proactive injury prevention training and early injury intervention practices
  • Growing employee adoption of weight management and smoking cessation initiatives

The Health at Work Awards are sponsored by ComPsych and its HealthyGuidance program. HealthyGuidance addresses the full continuum of emotional and physical health for employees and targets the behaviors that drive unhealthy lifestyles. A natural extension of the employee assistance program (EAP), HealthyGuidance empowers employees to make healthy lifestyle changes while helping them overcome barriers to success such as emotional and mental health issues.
