Driver Sales Representative Vern Pratt worked in the excavation industry for many years before he received an opportunity to transport cars and established a career in professional driving. After 25 years behind the wheel, Vern is thankful that he is able to have a job that is also one of his passions.

“When first starting out, I chose to join Con-way Freight because I admired the drivers’ professionalism and uniforms,” Vern said. “Their method looked like the way deliveries should be made to customers. Now that I have been working with some of the same customers for 20 years, it’s nice to know that I have been able to make great impression on them as a Con-way Freight driver.”

Driving an average of 110 miles per day on his pick-up and delivery route, Vern said the biggest challenge he faces while on the road is trying to predict possible mistakes of other drivers.

“One of the most important things I have learned is that defensive driving is the key to staying safe,” Vern advised. “You always have to pay attention to other motorists and make sure that you have a way to get out of any dangerous situations. This may mean slowing down a bit to allow plenty of distance between yourself and the car in front of you. In the end, an accident is going to cost you a lot more time.”

Vern credits remaining patient and level headed while driving with allowing him to reach two million miles without an accident. He urges other drivers do the same, noting that while it can be frustrating to be in traffic, getting angry and aggressive only makes the situation worse.

“I’m just proud to have been able to achieve such a huge goal,” Vern said. “It’s great that Con-way recognizes us for driving safely. It has given me a great sense of accomplishment both personally and professionally.”

A resident of Francesville, Ind., Vern is based out of Con-way Freight’s Kokomo, Ind. service center. He has been married for 29 years to his wife, Patty, and has three children: Veronica, Bo and Cody; and five grandchildren: Macy, Lucas, Connor, Remington and Kennedi. In his spare time, he enjoys stock car racing and playing billiards.
