Con-way Freight DSR John Patea got his start in the trucking industry as a supplemental dock worker loading and unloading trailers. But it didn’t take long for him to realize that what he really wanted to do was drive.
“In 1988, I was offered the opportunity to take driving classes so I jumped at the chance to get my CDL,” John said. “I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. While I have learned that truck driving has its challenges, it’s rewarding and that’s what I love about it.”
John says that what helps him stay safe on the road is maintaining a consistent routine and getting plenty of rest while off duty.
“My biggest responsibility while driving is to stay focused and aware of my surroundings,” he said. “I always try to anticipate the next move of those around me out on the road so I’m not caught off guard if something unexpected happens. You can’t control anyone’s actions but your own — staying true to your routine is what will get you to your destination safely.”
When asked what being a professional driver means to him, John answered, “Everything drivers do while on the clock reflects on them and the company they drive for. Personally, I take pride in the uniform that I wear and the the industry that I represent. It’s my job to make sure that I am always setting a good example and contributing to a positive image of the industry.”
While John is proud to be one of the few drivers that have completed two million accident-free miles, his true motivation for reaching this goal has always been keeping others safe.
“This is a great achievement, but for me the best feeling is knowing that when I go home at night I have helped create and maintain a safe passage for others on the road,” John said. “I’m glad that I have the opportunity to make a contribution to the positive in the world.”
A resident of Salt Lake City, John is based out of Con-way Freight’s Salt Lake City service center. He has been married for 28 years to his wife, June, and has five children: John Jr., Jacqueline, Josephine, Jeremiah and Jessica; and three grandchildren. In his spare time, John enjoys working on cars and watching sports.
