Two Million Mile Safe Drivers

2010

David Spear
DSR, LLR

While growing up Con-way Freight DSR David Spear was always around large trucks. His father was a terminal manager for a small trucking company and he began going to work with him when he was about 10 years old.

“Since my dad managed a terminal, he did a little bit of everything and I was always right there with him when I was young.” David said. “I was able to start driving at 18 and have been a professional truck driver ever since. I like that I have the freedom to be my own boss when I am out on the road.”

David says that he has stayed safe on the road by always keeping his mind on what he is doing and staying off of his cell phone. One of the biggest challenges that he faces while on the road is that traffic has increased dramatically in the last 15 years and now people are constantly distracted while driving and talking on their cell phones.

“I am lucky that my family understands the importance of my job and does not distract me by calling constantly while I am on the road,” he said. “When your mind is wandering, you can get yourself in big trouble. I try never to get into my truck when I am angry or upset with a personal problem, because when your mind is not on the job you are going to make a mistake.”

David recognizes that accidents can happen to anyone, no matter how careful a driver is and he is thankful that he has been fortunate enough to avoid them.

To him, reaching two million accident-free miles shows that he has done his job successfully and that he truly cares about everyone’s safety.

A resident of Conway, Ark., David is based out of Con-way Freight’s Little Rock, Ark., service center. He has been married for 38 years to his wife, Bettie, and has one daughter, Summer; and one grandson, Jacob. In his spare time, David enjoys playing golf.
