All seven of Con-way’s operating units in North America have achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. The certifications apply to the company’s less-than-truckload (LTL), emergency/expedite shipping, logistics and warehousing, air freight forwarding, truckload brokerage, and intermodal service operations. Certification recognizes that Con-way’s processes and procedures are consistent across their system and meet or exceed customer expectations.
The certifications were granted by AQSR, an independent, approved registrar credentialed by the Registrar Accreditation Board of the Switzerland-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The ISO 9001 certification was awarded for operational compliance with processes and procedures expected from leading companies. The ISO 14001 certification was awarded for compliance with leading processes and procedures to protect the environment.
The effort to pursue ISO certification was initiated within Con-way in March 2002. The consulting firm of UHY Advisors, Inc. (UHY) of Southfield, Mich., was hired to introduce Con-way to all of the ISO requirements. “It did not take us long to prepare Con-way for the audit process,” said Alan Lund, consulting principle at UHY. “Con-way had well-documented policies and procedures and they have continuously invested in employee training to ensure these procedures are well known. The documented detail of Con-way’s processes and procedures, as well as their employees’ implementation of those procedures, was impressive. It made them an excellent candidate for ISO certification.”
In September 2002, AQSR was selected to perform the stringent ISO review and audit that was completed in May. “We were impressed with the level of compliance to existing ISO standards throughout the Con-way organization,” said Brad Kitchen, Vice President of AQSR. “This is an organization with a large number of employees spread over many offices and a vast expanse of geography. That typically presents a real challenge for an organization to gain consistent compliance with processes and procedures. That was not the case with Con-way. We saw a focus on quality and environmental practices throughout the entire organization. Our hats are off to them,” said Kitchen.
